Yarn Basics
Yarn comes in all shapes and sizes, or as we call it—weights! And that’s just a fancy way of saying how thick or thin the yarn is. From super fine to super chunky, each weight brings something different to the table, so let’s break it down:
🪶 Lace Weight (0): This is the finest, most delicate yarn. It’s perfect for lightweight, elegant projects like shawls or doilies. Since it’s so thin, you’ll be using smaller hooks to create intricate, detailed stitches.
✨ Super Fine (1): Slightly thicker than lace, this yarn is often used for socks or baby garments. It’s still fine enough for lightweight projects, and you’ll use a small hook to keep your stitches tight and neat.
🧶 Fine (2): Also called sport weight, this yarn is great for things like lightweight sweaters, scarves, and accessories. It’s thin but manageable, so you’ll want to stick with a smaller hook for clean, defined stitches.
🌟 Light (3): This includes DK (double knitting) yarn and light worsted. It’s a versatile choice, ideal for everything from sweaters to blankets. A medium-sized hook works perfectly to create smooth, even stitches.
💪 Medium (4): Known as worsted or aran, this is the yarn you’ll likely use for most projects! It’s easy to handle, pairs well with medium hooks, and works great for blankets, hats, and cozy sweaters.
🐻 Bulky (5): Now we’re stepping into chunky yarn territory! Bulky yarn is thick and works up quickly, making it perfect for scarves, hats, and ultra-cozy items. Use a large hook for big, bold stitches.
🐂 Super Bulky (6): The thickest yarn of all, super bulky creates those large, oversized stitches that make your projects extra warm and snuggly. It’s great for blankets, chunky scarves, and anything that screams coziness!
💡 Most yarn labels provide key information, including the yarn weight number, yardage or meterage, fiber content, care instructions, recommended hook or needle size, gauge information, and the dye lot number to ensure consistent color when using multiple skeins.
Let’s Talk Yarn Fibers
Yarn comes in all kinds of fibers, and each one has its own benefits.
🧶 Acrylic: This is your go-to for beginners. It’s affordable, comes in loads of colours, and is super versatile. The best part? It’s machine-washable, so it’s easy to care for.
🧶 Cotton: Smooth and sturdy, cotton is perfect for dishcloths or light, airy garments. It doesn’t stretch much, so it’s great for projects that need to keep their shape.
🧶 Wool: Warm and stretchy, wool is the ultimate choice for cozy winter makes. Just watch out for the scratchy kinds—stick to soft wool or wool blends for that extra snuggle factor.
🧶 Blends: Want the best of both worlds? Blends combine the softness of wool with the durability of acrylic, making them super versatile and practical.
