Now that you’re familiar with your essential tools and yarn, it’s time to get comfortable with how to hold them. Just like with other crochet techniques, there’s no “right” way to hold your yarn and hook—what matters most is finding a grip that feels natural to you.

Holding Your Hook

🔪 The Knife Grip: In this method, you hold the hook as if you’re holding a knife. Your thumb and index finger pinch the flat part of the hook, while your other fingers wrap around the handle for support.

✏️ The Pencil Grip: Much like holding a pencil, you cradle the hook between your thumb and index finger, letting your other fingers rest lightly on the hook for balance and control.

Managing Your Yarn

👉 Over the Index Finger: A popular method, where you loop the yarn over your index finger and guide it with the rest of your fingers to control tension.

👉 Around the Pinky: For more tension control, try wrapping the yarn around your pinky before looping it over your index finger. This method can help manage the flow of yarn more smoothly.
