Making The Body (Part 1 of 6)
MAKING THE BODY
👉 Start with a Magic Ring
Create a Magic Ring. If you are stuck with this, refer to our Magic Ring video for a step-by-step guide on starting your project.
Row 1
Crochet 8 Single Crochet (Sc) stitches into the Magic Ring. Pull the loop tight to close the ring.
Row 2
Increase (Inc) in every stitch around. This means you’ll do two Single Crochet (Sc) stitches in each of the 8 stitches from Row 1. At the end of this row, you’ll have 16 stitches.
Row 3
Alternate between Single Crochet (Sc) and an Increase (Inc) in each stitch.
Single Crochet (Sc) in the first stitch, then Increase (Inc) in the next, and repeat this pattern around.
You’ll now have 24 stitches.
Row 4
Alternate between doing two Single Crochets (2 Sc) and an Increase (Inc).
Single Crochet (Sc) in the first stitch, Single Crochet (Sc) in the second stitch, and then Increase (Inc) in the third stitch. Repeat this around.
You’ll now have 32 stitches.
Rows 5-11
Work one Single Crochet (Sc) in each stitch around.
This means you’ll continue without adding or decreasing stitches, keeping 32 stitches per row.
Tip: Use a stitch marker to keep track of where your rows begin.
Place the Eyes
After completing Row 8, attach safety eyes between Rows 8 and 9. Make sure the eyes are about 5 stitches apart. This will help give your chicken its cute expression!
Row 12
Start decreasing by alternating between two Single Crochets (2 Sc) and a Decrease (Dec).
Single Crochet (Sc) in the first stitch, Single Crochet (Sc) in the second stitch, then Decrease (Dec) in the next. Repeat this around.
At the end of this row, you’ll have 24 stitches.
Row 13
Alternate between one Single Crochet (Sc) and a Decrease (Dec).
Single Crochet (Sc) in the first stitch, then Decrease (Dec) in the next. Repeat this pattern around.
You’ll now have 16 stitches.
Row 14
Decrease (Dec) in every stitch around.
This means you’ll do a Decrease (Dec) in each stitch.
At the end, you’ll have 8 stitches.
Row 15
Continue decreasing until the opening is small enough to close completely.
When finished, Fasten Off (FO) and sew the opening shut with your yarn needle.
Making the Beak (Part 2 of 6)
MAKING THE BEAK
👉 Start with a Magic Ring
This is the base for your beak and will allow you to pull the stitches tightly into a small point.
Row 1
Crochet 8 Single Crochet (Sc) stitches into the Magic Ring.
Insert your hook into the ring, yarn over, and pull up a loop.
Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook to complete one Single Crochet (Sc). Repeat this 8 times.
Pull Tight
Once you’ve completed all 8 stitches, gently pull the loose end of the Magic Ring to close the loop completely. This will give the beak its sharp, conical shape.
Slip Stitch (Sl St) (not shown in video)
Insert your hook into the first stitch of the row (the first Single Crochet (Sc) you made). Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook to make a Slip Stitch (Sl St). This creates a clean finish for the row.
Fasten Off (FO)
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail (about 6–8 inches). Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook to secure it.
Ready to Attach
The long tail you left will be used to sew the beak onto the chicken’s body later.
Making the Feet (Part 3 of 6)
MAKING THE FEET
You’ll need to make two feet for your chicken.
👉 Start with a Magic Ring
Create a Magic Ring. This will be the base for the foot.
Row 1
Crochet 6 Single Crochet (Sc) stitches into the Magic Ring.
Insert your hook into the ring, yarn over, and pull up a loop.
Yarn over again and pull through both loops on your hook to complete one Single Crochet (Sc). Repeat this 6 times.
Pull the loose end of the Magic Ring to close the loop tightly.
Row 2
Increase (Inc) in every stitch around.
Work 2 Single Crochet (Sc) stitches into each stitch from Row 1.
You’ll now have 12 stitches in total.
Row 3
Single Crochet (Sc) around.
Work one Single Crochet (Sc) stitch into each of the 12 stitches from the previous row. This keeps the foot's shape stable.
Drawstring Cinching
Thread the loose yarn tail onto a yarn needle and weave it through the stitches of the final row. Pull the yarn tightly to close the opening, forming a round foot shape.
Fasten Off (FO)
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail (about 6–8 inches). Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook to secure it.
Making the Comb (Part 4 of 6)
MAKING THE COMB
👉 Start by making a foundation chain of 6 stitches
Create a slipknot on your hook.
Yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook 6 times. Each pull creates one chain stitch.
Row 1
Create the Scalloped Comb Shape
In the first chain: Make 3 Single Crochet (Sc) stitches into the same chain space. This creates a small bump, the first "scallop" of the comb.
In the next chain: Make a Slip Stitch (Sl St) by inserting your hook into the chain, yarning over, and pulling through both loops on your hook. This creates a flat section between the bumps.
Repeat this pattern (3 Single Crochet (Sc) in one chain, then Slip Stitch (Sl St) in the next) until you reach the end of the row.
Fasten Off (FO)
Once you finish the row, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail (about 6–8 inches).
Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook to secure it.
Making the Wings (Part 5 of 6)
MAKING THE WING
You’ll need to make two wings for your chicken.
👉 Start with a Magic Ring
Create a Magic Ring. This will be the base for the wing.
Row 1
Crochet 6 Single Crochet (Sc) stitches into the Magic Ring.
Insert your hook into the ring, yarn over, and pull up a loop.
Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook to complete one Single Crochet (Sc). Repeat this 6 times.
Pull the loose end of the Magic Ring to close it tightly.
Row 2
Single Crochet (Sc) around.
Work one Single Crochet (Sc) stitch into each of the 6 stitches from the previous row. This keeps the shape consistent.
Row 3
Shape the wing with decreases.
Work 2 Single Crochet (2 Sc) stitches.
Next, make a Decrease (Dec) by crocheting two stitches together.
Then work 2 Single Crochet (2 Sc) stitches again.
Fasten Off (FO)
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail (about 6–8 inches). Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook to secure it.
Final Assembly (Part 6 of 6)
FINAL ASSEMBLY
Now that you’ve completed all the pieces, it’s time to assemble your chicken! You should have the following parts:
💪 1 body
💪 1 comb
💪 1 beak
💪 2 feet
💪 2 wings
Follow these steps to sew everything onto the body:
Attach the Comb
Place the comb on top of the chicken’s head. Position it so the scalloped edge faces forward, giving the chicken its characteristic look.
Thread the long tail of the comb through a yarn needle. Sew the comb securely onto the top of the head by weaving the needle in and out of the stitches on the body.
Knot the yarn securely on the inside of the body and trim any excess.
Attach the Beak
Position the beak just below the eyes on the front of the chicken’s body.
Use the long tail of the beak and your yarn needle to sew it securely in place.
Make sure the beak is centered and well-secured. Tie off and trim the yarn inside the body.
Attach the Wings
Decide on the placement for the wings—one on each side of the body, slightly below the midpoint.
Use the long tails of the wings to sew them onto the body. Stitch around the edges to ensure they’re attached firmly but still maintain their curved shape.
Tie off and trim the yarn inside the body.
Attach the Feet
Position the feet at the bottom of the chicken, slightly toward the front. This will help your chicken sit upright.
Use the long tails of the feet to sew them securely to the bottom of the body. Make sure they’re aligned for balance.
Knot and trim the yarn inside the body.
Final Touches
Check that all parts are securely attached. Adjust any positioning if needed.
Fluff up your chicken and ensure there are no loose threads visible.
